Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne uses ICDL for community outreach project

Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne received a special mention in the ICDL Schools competition earlier this year.

The school offers students a grounding in ICDL modules to develop digital skills that will help them in other classes at school. Students typically study six modules as part of the ICDL Academic Profile Pack from the ICDL Workforce programme, such as Documents, Spreadsheets and Presentation.

ICDL gave the students an opportunity to develop their own skills through certification before passing on what they had learnt to adults in the local community.

Through 121digital, the Dingle students then used their ICDL skills to give tutoring to older generations who are looking to develop their digital skills or gain confidence with computers or the internet.

Over 5000 students nationwide have taken part in the 121digital programme. 80% of students who take part in 121digital across Ireland rate the tutoring experience highly compared to other modules taken in transition year and 95% would be happy to be a tutor again.

Passing on their ICDL skills to adults allowed students to become teachers for a while to gain new perspectives and shared an understanding with the adults they were helping. They also developed important life skills such as patience, understanding and empathy.
